“Loving Christ, Loving Each Other”

Pastor Michael Gullett

Mavity began as a cottage prayer meeting in the summer 1953.  In July of that year a revival took place in what was the old Grassland Schoolhouse and services  continued there until the fall. Under the leadership of the Rev. Hagar French, the group moved to a small store building at the intersection of Bear Creek Rd and US 23.

As God continued to bless and the small congregation continued to grow, a permanent church was built just a few feet from the storefront.  The leaders of the church decided to join with the Freewill Baptist association.  At the organizational meeting Ernest Tackett made a motion to name the new church Mavity Freewill Baptist and so it began.

In the 58 years since those humble beginnings as a prayer meeting in an old schoolhouse, Mavity has grown to a membership of more than 150.  Not only has Mavity grown in numbers, but the building changed as the congregation continued to grow.  The little block church underwent several renovations to accommodate the growth.  Finally after 50 years it was obvious the little church could no longer serve the work that God had begun and plans began for the future.  In 2005 the church moved to a brand new facility and location high on a hilltop just a few miles from I-64 and the old church.

The altar in the little country church on the side of the road has seen many souls saved, lives changed, and ministries begun. No matter what changes the church went through in appearance, there is one constant...our love for one another, for our Savior and a desire to see the lost saved.

In Matthew 5:14 -16 Jesus said, “Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel..... Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.”

However challenging this may be, we can let our lights shine through our continued faith in God and our obedience to his word.  The vision & legacy that began in a cottage prayer meeting will remain and flourish for our future generations.
